From Kuching to the Met Gala: The Story of Dickson Lim | Gotalk Studios
Fashion dreams often feel distant for many young creatives growing up in Sarawak. But for Dickson Lim, what began inside his parents’ tailoring shop in Kuching eventually led to one of the biggest fashion stages in the world — the Met Gala.
Gotalk Studios recently had the privilege of interviewing the founder of The Dickson Lim Brand, where we explored his personal journey, creative struggles, inspirations, and the discipline behind building an internationally recognised fashion label.
Recently, Dickson Lim made headlines after one of his bespoke menswear designs appeared at the prestigious 2026 Met Gala in New York. The outfit was worn by celebrity stylist Ty Hunter, famously known as Beyoncé’s longtime stylist and fashion director. The moment became even more surreal when images of the design appeared alongside Beyoncé on the front page of The Wall Street Journal.
But behind the glamour and recognition lies years of dedication and sacrifice.
During our interview, Dickson shared how his journey into fashion started at a very young age. Growing up around fabrics, sewing machines, and tailoring work, he developed a deep appreciation for craftsmanship and detail. Unlike many luxury designers with formal European training, Dickson built much of his knowledge through hands-on experience, self-learning, experimentation, and relentless persistence.
His story is especially inspiring for young Sarawakians because it proves that global success does not only belong to people from major fashion capitals like Paris, Milan, or New York. Coming from Kuching, Sarawak, Dickson managed to break into an international industry through consistency, originality, and an obsession with detail.
Over the years, The Dickson Lim Brand became known for sharp tailoring, modern menswear aesthetics, and sophisticated silhouettes. His work has also been worn by several international personalities including Mason Alexander Park, 24kGoldn, Bretman Rock, Reece Feldman, and other global figures in entertainment and fashion.
One of the most powerful moments during our conversation was hearing how important discipline and hard work were in his growth. Success did not happen overnight. From designing collections independently to building industry relationships and maintaining high craftsmanship standards, Dickson emphasised that consistency was the real foundation behind his achievements.
The interview also highlighted how Sarawakian talent is increasingly gaining international recognition across creative industries. Dickson’s Met Gala milestone is not only a personal achievement but also a proud moment for Sarawak and Malaysia as a whole.

At Gotalk Studios, our mission has always been to document and share inspiring Sarawakian journeys — stories that motivate young people to dream bigger while staying connected to their roots. Interviewing Dickson Lim was a reminder that world-class talent can come from anywhere, including our own backyard here in Sarawak.
His journey from a tailor’s son in Kuching to having his design showcased at the Met Gala serves as proof that passion, vision, and perseverance can open doors far beyond what we once imagined.
